Last week I helped staff a nonprofit capacity building conference sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation for its grantees.  A standout marketing seminar was led by Bob Tobin of the Williams Group, an old hand at this planning stuff.  He walked the groups through practical steps to develop a measurable communications plan.  If participants went home and finished their work, they were in great shape.  You may be able to see his handouts, and those of other speakers, at the CenterPoint Institute website.

Since most nonprofits can't afford to hire a Bob Tobin to facilitate their planning, it's good to see an online tool that offers some of the same sage advice...and a way to actually write down your plan as you go along.  Called SmartChart, it walks you through all decisions and steps needed to create an effective communications campaign.  You can even save your work and return to finish it later. The program was developed by the Communications Leadership Institute, with funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
