Please Turn Your Cell Phone ON?

Using cell phones to deliver guided tours is not a new thing.  Southern Utah University did it in 2002 for a photography exhibit.  But an AP article today will attract more attention to this why-didn't-I think-of-that idea, mentioning museums in California, Washington state, Minnesota and Connecticut that are now feeding museum tours through cell phones ("press 6 to hear about the next painting").

As I meet with nonprofits about e-communications possibilities, I am struck by the resistance that exists to trying something new (and that may be a bit technologically scary).  Maybe this entre by nonprofit museums, crossing even the tabu line of "cell phones OFF please" will jog some minds about the possibilities out there.

If you're interested in the technology that's making the museum tours possible, check out Guide by Cell, Spatial Adventures, Inc and Museum 411.
